Which Michigan cities have the highest divorced populations?

On Behalf of | Dec 8, 2023 | Divorce

On the whole, the number of divorced adults living in Michigan is about 9%. But this reality is not reflected evenly across the entire state. For example, in East Lansing, there is just 2% of the population is divorced.

But in other parts of the state, the rate of divorced adults living in any given area can be much higher. For instance, Davison has the highest divorce population rate, at 21%. That’s more than twice the average rate in the state and more than 10 times as high as the rate in East Lansing. Just behind Davison is Howell, a city of slightly over 10,000 people. But despite this very small population, the divorced population rate is still 19%. There are roughly 1,523 divorcees living in Howell.

The top 10 in order

If you’re curious about the overview of the state and the municipalities that are in the top 10 when it comes to divorced population rates, they are as follows:

  1. Davison
  2. Howell
  3. Belding
  4. Greenville
  5. Alpena
  6. Dowagiac
  7. Muskegon Heights
  8. Escanaba
  9. Milan
  10. Zeeland

It is important to note that these statistics and the corresponding ranking is not based on the overall divorce rate, which people will often say is around 50%. These numbers are concerned with the total percentage of divorced individuals within any population. It is, obviously, that some of the intact marriages in the communities mentioned will eventually end via divorce.

But either way, this certainly sheds some light on divorce trends in Michigan and across the United States. If you and your spouse are going to end your marriage this year, you need to know what steps to take regarding property division, parenting time and much more, regardless of where you live. Seeking legal guidance as proactively as possible can be to your benefit as a result.
